The Matrix (Original)
The Matrix was one of the most popular scripts at the time, with rumors circulating around casting Will Smith and Brad Pitt for the protagonist role of Neo. Ultimately, Keanu Reeves landed the renowned role, and it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his place as the computer programmer who made viewers ponder reality itself.
According to Keanu Reeves his role in the "Matrix trilogy" was one of the favorites he appeared in. Of those, the original is the hardest to fault and undeniably the best.
John Wick (2014)
Keanu Reeves' John Wick movie is another one of fans favorites as well as one of his personal favorites, claiming it to be the simplest and most fulfilling of them all. With the 2014 original gaining love and respect from fans, the John wick franchise has continued to create big hit sequels with the latest being John Wick 4.
The movie has a familiar, almost charmingly simple plot revolving around an ex-hitman getting revenge on a group of gangsters who were foolish enough to steal his car and murder his dog. It's paced incredibly well, features some compelling action, and also would have to be one of Reeves' best performances, making it easy to see why it kickstarted such a successful series.
Point Break (1991)
Before John Wick, Keanu Reeves proved his action in 1991's Point Break, a thrilling and entertaining movie that showcased his range and believable presence as an action star. Reeves plays a young undercover agent tasked with infiltrating a gang of bank robbers but finds himself becoming increasingly entranced by their carefree lifestyle.
His performance in this movie demonstrates that he had the talent and charisma to carry an action movie, and he does so with ease. Point Break is over-the-top and cheesy in some moments, but its infectious energy and excitement make it one of the decade's standout action films.
My Own Private Idaho (1991))
Another notable film in Keanu Reeves' filmography is My Own Private Idaho, released in the same year as Point Break. While the two movies couldn't be more different in terms of tone and genre, they both showcase Reeves' versatility as an actor.
My Own Private Idaho is a character-driven drama that follows a pair of young men on a road trip, inspired by Shakespeare's Henry IV. The film is an exploration of friendship and identity, and its impact was made even more impactful by the death of Reeves' co-star, River Phoenix, two years after its release.
The Devil's Advocate (1997)
The Devil's Advocate is a movie that's sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!
In this film, Keanu plays a young lawyer who joins a prestigious New York law firm, only to find himself in the midst of a wild and unpredictable world. Meanwhile, Al Pacino brings his legendary charm and scene-chewing skills to the role of the boss, a mysterious and powerful figure who's not afraid to bend the rules.
Keanu's character isn't just a passive observer in this wild ride. He's the protagonist, the fresh-faced lawyer who's trying to make sense of this strange new world.
A Scanner Darkly (2006)
A Scanner Darkly is a lesser-known personal favorite of Keanu Reeves' that's often overshadowed by his other notable film picks. However, it's a cult classic that appeals if you are a fan of science fiction with a psychological twist and a trippy vibe.
The movie follows a disorienting animation style and shows the story of an undercover cop whose life spirals out of control after he becomes addicted to a mysterious new drug. While it may be frustrating or off-putting at times, the film has an undeniable charm that makes it easy to see why fans hold it near and dear
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
The Matrix Reloaded is the second installment of the iconic Matrix trilogy that builds upon the groundwork laid in the first movie. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss's chemistry is off the charts, and their romance is so heart-pumping, it'll leave you breathless.
Although not as in-depth as the first release, still, it is a worthwhile and very entertaining sequel, and most fans love how it spends more time with the characters and brings out the unique qualities of the series building love in their hearts for Reeves
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, was totally a blockbuster in 1989. This movie is a goofy and heartwarming time-travel comedy about two high school friends who are gonna fail history if they don't get their act together.
But then they meet a time-traveler from the future, and stuff gets pretty far out. Of all Keanu's most badass roles, his portrayal of Ted might be the earliest and most influential of them all
River's Edge (1986)
River's Edge is one of the few early movies starring Reeves that isn't comedic, given River's Edge is a bleak crime/drama film about a group of friends being torn apart when one member of the group murders another.
It is not super popular. But has gained a big place in the hearts of fans and Keanu Reeves is clearly (and justifiably) proud of it
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
The final film in the original Matrix trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions is one of fans’ favorites among Keanu Reeves' film. It wraps up the main narrative of the trilogy surrounding the large-scale war between machines and humanity, though does so with less compelling action than seen in films 1 and 2.
Now after seeing some of Reeves' movies that stole the hearts of fans, let's dive into reasons why Keanu Reeves is loved by fans home and abroad
He Lends helping hand
Long before the actress Octavia Spencer became famous Oscar winner, she one day met an unexpected car trouble after she left her house extremely dressed down to pick up a script for an audition. On the way home, her car broke down in the middle of the street in a posh area of Beverly Hills
As she stood on the streets waiting for help to come, Reeves the ever kind soul, saw her and lent a helping hand. He asked Octavia to get into the car while he pushed it safely from the road. When the people sitting at their cafe tables recognized Keanu Reeves, a number of them got up, crossed the street, and helped push the car to the curb so they could rub shoulders with this kindhearted celebrity
He Respects Ladies Boundaries
You can see it in the many fan photos he’s posed for over the years, both with famous actresses and everyday women. Keanu Reeves has what’s come to be known on the internet as “hover hands.” He never puts his hands on women out of consideration for their personal boundaries. But he is always ready to give lend a helping hand when needed
Taking Pay Cuts for Co-Workers
In the 1997 movie The Devil’s Advocate, where Reeves played the lead role, the producers in order to bring on Al Pacino, intended to reduce the pay of other cast members but Keanu Reeves voluntarily took a $2 million cut in pay instead. In another film, producers wanted to add Gene Hackman to the cast for The Replacements, so Reeves took an 80% pay cut
He is Friendly
In 2019, Keanu Reeves was on a flight from San Francisco to Burbank when the passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Bakersfield, CA. He and his fellow passengers got off the plane and milled about the airport, trying to decide what to do. Reeves was right there with them, discussing the situation with his fellow travelers. He took a bus ride with them and maintained a friendly conversation with all of them
Standing in the Rain
It was the night of his wrap party for his movie Exposed, and it was raining non-stop outside. Reeves arrived at the venue where he found a long line of people, waiting their turn in the downpour to be admitted into the building. At this point, any other celeb would pull some strings to get inside but Reeves politely went to the back of the line and waited for over twenty minutes for his turn to be allowed into his own party
He is nice to his co-stars
While on the set of "Speed," Bullock said she told Reeves that she had never tried Champagne or truffles. Not long after, Reeves arrived at her place with flowers, Champagne, and truffles, the actor told Esquire in 202
She told Esquire he said, "I just thought you might want to try Champagne and truffles, to see what it's like.”
Recognizing the Team Behind the Scenes
Keanu was paid $10 million upfront for the first Matrix movie. The film was such a success that he went on to earn $114 million from it. He voluntarily redirected $80 million of that to the Special Effects and Make-Up teams to make the Matrix film franchise even better. And when the first Matrix film wrapped, he gave each of the twelve stuntmen a Harley Davidson motorcycle to acknowledge their dangerous, hard work. Reeves is known for his pretty generous wrap-gifts. When he finished up John Wick, his stunt crew each received a Rolex watch—personalized
He kind to strangers
One time Keanu Reeves had his motorcycle scratched after it was backed into by an SUV driver who didn't see the motorcycle where it was parked. The police were called and asked the woman to hand over her license and registration. However, when Reeves appeared and the police informed him of what happened, he remained low-key the entire time. He walked over to examined his custom motorcycle and said that there was no damage as far as he was concerned and said he wasn't going to press charges and let the woman go freely
Unlike a lot of other celebrities, Keanu doesn’t put his whole life out there on social media or, really, in the press at all. Because of that, he’s remained one of the most drama-free people in Hollywood
Proud of his roots
Some actors do certain projects earlier in their careers that they look back and down on, but not Keanu Reeves. He’s never shown an ounce of shame for anything he’s done — not that he should have. He returned to two of his most infamous roles years later, including Ted Logan for 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music and 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.
