According to authorities, a gunman killed five people and injured eight others during a shooting in downtown Louisville on Monday morning. A loud sound of gunfire echoed across Louisville Slugger Field from the Old National Bank Building in the early morning rush hour.

When police were dispatched, they responded within three minutes of receiving emergency calls around 8:30 a.m. Police responded by shooting Connor Sturgeon, 25, who was shot and killed by officers, according to Interim Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel of the Louisville Metro Police Department.

She said Sturgeon used a rifle as part of his job at the bank. As of yet, she did not know how the gunman acquired the weapon. The attack was live-streamed online, said Gwinn-Villaroel. There are many people hurting out there, as well, according to the Kentucky governor.

A Louisville police officer identified four victims as Joshua Barrick, 63, Thomas Elliott, James Tutt, and Juliana Farmer, all of whom were killed in Monday afternoon's shooting. Beshear said Elliott and Beshear were close friends, and Elliott was a senior vice president at Old National Bank.

An emotional Beshear told reporters that Elliott helped him become governor and advised him to be a good father. According to his LinkedIn profile of Eckert, 57-year-old Deanna Eckert also died on Monday evening. According to a LinkedIn profile, Eckert worked as an executive administrative officer at the bank.

Treatment was provided for gunshot wounds

Three police officers, among other victims, were hospitalized with injuries at the University of Louisville Hospital, according to the hospital. Five patients were treated for gunshot wounds on Monday afternoon. Three were released, three more were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and three more were in critical condition.

He had just graduated from the police academy on March 31 when the attack occurred, Gwinn-Villaroel said. She said Wilt was shot in the head and had brain surgery after the attack.

The deadly attack was met with grief by officials

According to Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, the shooting was a "horrific tragedy" and an "evil act of gun violence" that was widely condemned. The shooting received messages of support and grief from the Louisville community.

As a result of the attack, Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Leader, and his wife, Elaine, were devastated and praying for those injured. As President and first lady Jill Biden said, the nation remains in mourning after another senseless act of gun violence. They expressed gratitude to the responding officers and prayed for the victims.

Legislators passed the bill

A new Kentucky law that came into effect late last month barred state and local law enforcement officials from assisting in any federal bans on guns, ammunition, or firearm accessories. Biden also called for stricter gun safety laws. The GOP in Congress must take action to protect our communities before some more Americans die.

A GOP majority in Kentucky's legislature approved the bill, which became law after Democratic governor Beshear did not sign or veto it. The Gun Violence Archive has compiled data on 146 mass-shooting incidents this year.
