The McConnell spokesman said in an early Thursday statement that McConnell had been admitted to the hospital following his stay at a local hotel this evening. The Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. is where McConnell fell, according to a source familiar with the situation. His condition has not been disclosed.

FDDC firefighters responded to a fall call at the Waldorf Astoria at 9:17 p.m. Wednesday, according to a District of Columbia spokesman. They transported the male to an area hospital. The Republican senator from Texas, John Cornyn, tweeted well-wishes for McConnell's quick recovery.

Childhood polio diagnosis

In 2018, he cited his battle against polio as motivation to eradicate the disease worldwide. He was diagnosed with polio during his childhood before a vaccine was available. Without continued support, he warned, "progress could rapidly erode."

According to McConnell, "it is underappreciated outside of the public health community how much effort and innovation must continue even after a disease has faded from the headlines." The longest-serving Senate Republican leader in history, McConnell was elected to the Senate in 1984.
