Shocking Successes; After 17 Days Of Release, 'Barbie' Surpasses $1 Billion!

Barbie is the first movie solely directed by a woman to ever gross over $1 billion at international box offices. It is one of the Greta Gerwig-directed American fantasy comedies. After countless computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television movies, this is the first live-action Barbie movie.

Blockbuster hit!

Sales of tickets for "Barbie," launched on July 21, totaled $459 million in North America and another $572 million from theatres elsewhere. Even in its third weekend in cinemas, the movie drew audiences and brought in $53 million domestically and $74 million internationally. 

Following "Spider-Man: No Way Home," "Top Gun: Maverick," "Jurassic World Dominion," and "Avatar: The Way of Water," it is just the second blockbuster this year and the sixth of the pandemic era to gross over $1 billion.

Blockbuster hits directed by women are:

• Frozen - $1.3 billion
• Frozen 2 - $ 1.45 billion
• Captain Marvel - $1.1 billion

After only 17 days of release, "Barbie" has reached the desired milestone and is the eighth film from Warner Bros. in the studio's 100-year history. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" previously held the record with its 19-day runtime.

Despite opposition from "Oppenheimer," "Meg 2: The Trench," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," "Barbie" has held the top spot at the box office for three straight weekends. 

It has now surpassed "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which grossed $574 million domestically and $1.35 billion globally, to become the second-highest-earning film of 2023. 

Hit billion on its third weekend!

If Barbie makes $1 billion on its third weekend, it will likely win the box office championship for 2023 by the sixth weekend. 

If attendance drops off after the next couple of Saturdays, it may require an extra week. Barbie should make $1.35 billion in any case within less than two months of publication and very likely within a month and a half.
