Bob Barker started his career when he was working in radio in 1956, when the producer, Ralph Edwards, invited him to audition as the new host of ‘Truth or Consequences’, a game show in which audience members had to do wacky stunts if they failed to answer a question. But the question was always the silly punchline to a riddle no one was ever meant to furnish. Barker stayed with ‘Truth or Consequences’ for 18 years, including several years in a syndicated version.

After his success hosting ‘Truth or Consequences’, Bob Barker began hosting a resurrected version of ‘The Price Is Right’ on CBS in 1972, after the original version in the 1950s and 1960s was hosted by Bill Cullen. It became TV’s longest-running game show and the last on a broadcast network after Bob Barker taped more than 5,000 shows in his career. The attraction of ‘The Price Is Right’ was audience members invited to the stage and competing for prizes by trying to guess their retail value. But, in the mid-1990s, he said on a prime-time television retrospective. that he was retiring because he was just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically was a lot for him. After his retirement, comedian Drew Carey was chosen to replace him.
