On February 10, 1930, Robert John Wagner Jr was born in Detroit, Michigan. Hazel, his mother, worked as a phone operator. His father, Robert Sr., was a traveling salesman who made a modest fortune by selling lacquer to Ford, which was utilized on their dashboards and paints in the automotive industry. He was seven years old when they relocated to Los Angeles. His father had amassed sufficient wealth to retire in warm Southern California. They even spent over a year custom-building a house in Bel Air that looks out onto the Bel Air Country Club.

Robert Jr. traveled to California before the family. He was transported off the Hollywood Military Academy and on a train alone. Many of Robert's classmates at his four separate military schools in Southern California were the offspring of well-known stars. In 1949, Wagner received his diploma from Saint Monica Catholic School.

Career

Robert started working as an extra in the 1950s. He made his film debut in the 1950s, "The Happy Years", in an uncredited role. When he was just 20 years old, Twentieth Century Fox signed him. His first project for Fox was the 1951 World War II movie "Halls of Montezuma." Richard Widmark joined Wagner in a supporting role. Later that year, in the film "The Frogmen," which also starred Widmark, he had another supporting role. In 1952's "With a Song in My Heart," Wagner made his acting debut as a shell-shocked soldier in a brief but impactful role.

By 1953, he was starring in films like "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef," "Prince Valiant," "A Kiss Before Dying" (for which he garnered a tonne of critical acclaim), and "Between Heaven and Hell" after playing a number of other modest roles in various films. He played the lead in the well-known Western "Broken Lance" in 1954. Then, Paramount borrowed Wagner for the 1956 film "The Mountain," in which he played Spencer Tracy's brother. Back at Fox, he played the lead part in the critically panned films "Between Heaven and Hell" and "The True Story of Jesse James" for director Nicholas Ray. In 1960, he tried to begin his career by appearing in his then-wife Natalie Wood's film "All the Fine Young Cannibals."

Wagner and Wood established Rona Productions, their own production firm, in 1961. In 1962, Wagner and Steve McQueen produced "The War Lover," which was filmed in England. He spent a few years living in Europe following the breakup of Wagner and Wood. The Pink Panther, a big hit in 1963, included Wagner there in "The Longest Day," "The Condemned of Altona," and other roles, but his role was so little that it went completely unnoticed.

As Alexander Mundy in the popular series "To Catch a Thief," he took on the first of three parts that would make him a legitimate celebrity in the late 1960s. From 1968 through 1970, the program aired on ABC. His comeback performance with Fred Astaire earned him an Emmy nomination for Best TV.

He played Pete Ryan in the popular television series "Switch" in the middle of the 1970s. He played the lead in the enormously popular sitcom "Hart to Hart" in the late 1970s. For his role on the show, he would get four Golden Globe Award nominations. He made a revival in the 1990s because of his role as Number 2 in the "Austin Powers" series. Since then, he has appeared in guest roles on a variety of sitcoms, including "Seinfeld," "Boston Legal," "Two and a Half Men," "Hustle," and "NCIS."

Personal life

In his memoirs, Wagner claimed to have slept with a number of well-known entertainers, including Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, and others. In December 1957, he wed Natalie Wood; their marriage ended in divorce in 1962. In July 1963, Wagner wed Marion Marshall, and they had a daughter named Katie. They split up in 1971. Wagner and Tina Sinatra were engaged from 1970 until 1972. When their engagement ended, Wagner resumed his romance with Wood, and the two were remarried on July 16, 1972. Courtney was their daughter.

On November 29, 1981, as the yacht Splendour was docked close to Catalina Island, Natalie Wood perished in the area. Wagner, Christopher Walken, and Dennis Davern, the Splendour's captain, were all present. Georgianne Walken's absence from the trip was never given a reason. Wagner claims that Wood was absent when he went to bed. According to the postmortem report, Wood had bruises on her body, arms, and cheek in addition to a blood alcohol level of 0.14% and the presence of two different medications, a motion sickness remedy, and a pain reliever.

Wagner said in his autobiography "Pieces of My Heart" that he and Wood had argued before she vanished. Two witnesses from a neighboring boat claimed to have heard a woman yelling for help in the middle of the night. Her death was classified as an accident due to hypothermia and drowning by the Los Angeles County coroner. When Davern, the boat's captain, publicly admitted that he had misled police during the initial investigation and that he had seen Wood and Wagner arguing that evening, the case was reopened in November 2011. He claimed that Wagner became enraged out of jealousy when Wood flirted with Walken and that Wagner refused to allow Davern to activate the searchlights and alert the authorities when Wood vanished.

Wagner was identified as a person of interest in investigating Wood's death by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in February 2018. Wagner has refuted being involved. After Natalie's passing, Wagner adopted Natasha Gregson Wagner, who was 11 then.
