Laverne Cox was born In Mobile, Alabama, on May 29, 1972. She was brought by her lone mother and grandmother in the AME Zion church and had an identical twin brother named M Lamar. Cox attempted suicide when she was 11 years old after experiencing bullying as a child for not acting manly enough. She received her basic education from the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Birmingham, where she first pursued dance before switching to creative writing. After that, Cox spent two years at Indiana University Bloomington before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College. She began her acting studies at the latter institution.

Professional career

She made her first TV debut by appearing on "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in 2008. She also appeared as a contestant on the first season of the VH1 reality series "I Want to Work for Diddy."
