Despite this, he was hired as an actor-in-residence and began working as an interpreter for ballet, opera, and orchestra companies in Washington. During this time, he also taught classes in mime and movement. Duffy says that his sister, a world champion diver, taught him how to swim, which helped him get his first career break.
Career
Early in the 1970s, Patrick Duffy portrayed a worker explaining an Enchirito in a Taco Bell commercial. He played Mark Harris in the brief-lived television series Man from Atlantis, which aired in 1977. After the show concluded in early 1978, he landed his big break playing Bobby Ewing opposite Barbara Bel Geddes and Larry Hagman in the prime-time soap opera Dallas. The program became a worldwide hit. Despite the show's popularity, Duffy chose to end it in 1985, and his character was portrayed as having died. He did, however, make a comeback in the famed shower scene from 1986, which made the 1985–1986 season "only a dream."
Both the television films Desolation Canyon and Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door featured Duffy as a lead actor.
