Having grown up in the suburbs of New York, Seinfeld did his first stand-up gig at the Catch a Rising Star comedy club. In his previous interview with Parade, he said he was "close to vomiting" and "wrecking" when he first entered comedy. However, he made it through his first act with a little liquid courage. According to [one] of my friends, he was a big Humphrey Bogart fan. He said Bogey would have a whiskey shot before doing that. I had a shot of whiskey at a bar next door. Since I don't drink, it could have been better. His big break came in 1981 when he appeared on Carson's Tonight Show, which served as the base for his series, Seinfeld, which debuted in 1989.
