Halyna was born on April 10, 1979, in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast, USSR. She is a Christian and of Ukrainian ethnicity, born with a sister named Svetlana Androsovyc. She spent her early years in the Arctic city of Murmansk, Russia, on a Soviet military installation. Her father had previously worked for the Soviet Navy there. She was called the named "army brat". She first became interested in working on a film while residing at the military post.

Halyna studied at National Agricultural University; she then visited the Kyiv National University. She first chose to participate in the program to study economics, but she eventually switched to journalism and became a Graduate of Kyiv National University. Halyna began her career as an investigative journalist in Eastern Europe and later moved to Los Angeles, California. There she focused her career on production and filmmaking. Later she moved to Los Angeles, where she accidentally bumped into famous cinematographer Bob Primes who persuaded her to work at the famous American Film Institute Conservatory. 

She joined the institute and completed her master's program in 2015, and later she was screened at the Camerimage International Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, and AFI test.

In an industry often controlled by men, Halyna established herself as a cinematographer despite being from a foreign nation. She was even one of the eight cinematographers selected for the Fox DP Lab initiative, which aimed to provide women cinematographers with a larger platform.

Halyna was recognized as one of the ten emerging directors of photography who were making an impact in 2019 as she ascended the career ladder as a cinematographer. She has worked on several other projects, including The Mad Hatter, Blindfire, Darlin, and Archenemy.
