Background

Gauthier was born in Belgium and emigrated with his family when he was two. His mother gave him the name Gotye, which corresponds to the Dutch word for France.

Gauthier has been passionate about his instrument and songwriting since a young age. He also formed his band, The Downstairs, with three of his high school friends, which disbanded after high school.

Gothe graduated from the University of Melbourne with his undergraduate degree.

His band De Backer recorded its first track with samples in 2001 and sent recordings to nearly every major Melbourne studio. Around this time, he met singer-songwriter Chris Schroeder, and they began performing under the name The Basics. They continued to tour Australia with live performances everywhere, and Gotye also released his solo album.

In addition to establishing a long professional relationship with Danny Rogers, Gotye's album Like Drawing Blood was picked up by his Triple J in 2006 and voted his number one in listener polls. In 2016, he was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Independent Album, Like Drawing Blood. He won the Outstanding New Independent Artist award at the Australian Independent Awards.

His album Mixed Blood reached number 44 on the ARIA album chart. In 2008, Like Drawing Blood won his iTunes Album of the Year award. In 2011, Gotye also released his Making Mirrors album, won numerous international awards, and made his American television debut at Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Regarding the current scenario, Gotye has released a live album titled The Songroom, ning two seasons and nine episodes, and plans to release a fourth studio album. Many Australian newspapers have named him one of his 50 most influential Australians in the arts. The earth-shaking success is due to 'Somebody That I Used to Know which is also considered one of his most successful songs in Australian music history.
