David adopted to use his middle name Hyde as there was another actor with the same name as David Pierce. Later began using the middle name Hyde because there was another actor named David Pierce. During his youth, he developed an interest in acting and liked playing the organ at a nearby church. After graduation, he entered Yale to study classical piano but then switched to English and Theatre Arts, earning degrees in 1981.

After graduating from college, Pierce relocated to New York City, where he took lessons at Michael Howard Studios while working as a security guard and selling ties at Bloomingdale's.

In 1982, he made his Broadway debut with a production of Christopher Durang's "Beyond Therapy." In 1987, made his television debut "In Spenser: For Hire" and "Crime Story." Bright Lights, Big City, was David's debut feature picture, and before the end of the decade, he also appeared in "Crossing Delancey," "Rocket Gibraltar," and "Vampire's Kiss" (1989).
