Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was born on February 21, 1946, in the Acton neighbourhood of London. He is the son of a factory worker, house painter, and decorator Bernard William Rickman and housewife, Margaret Doreen Rose. His paternal grandmother was Irish, while his mother was Welsh. Rickman later stated in April 2015. His mother was a Methodist, and he had a Catholic father. He had a sister named Sheila and two brothers named David and Michael.

After graduating from RADA, Alan Rickman performed three times at the Edinburgh International Festival and worked extensively with British repertory and experimental theatre groups. These productions included Chekhov's The Seagull and Snoo Wilson's The Grass Widow at the Royal Court Theatre. He joined the Court Drama Group in 1978 and got roles in plays like Romeo and Juliet and A View from the Bridge. He was cast in As You Like It while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). His breakthrough role was as Reverend Obadiah Slope in the 1982 BBC adaptation of Trollope's first two Barchester novels, The Barchester Chronicles.

In the 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Christopher Hampton's adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Howard Davies, Rickman played the Vicomte de Valmont, the male lead. In his first film, Die Hard, in 1988, Rickman played the antagonist Hans Gruber. Rickman's portrayal of Bruce Willis earned him critical acclaim and a spot on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains list as the 46th best villain in film history. He starred opposite Bruce Willis.

Before Rickman met his longtime partner Rima Horton,  he stated that his first crush was on a girl named Amanda at his school's sports day at ten years old. Rickman, then 19, met Rima Horton, then 18, in 1965. She became his partner in the early 1970s, served as an economics lecturer at Kingston University in London and was a Labour Party councillor on Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council from 1986 to 2006. Rickman confirmed in 2015 that they tied the knot in a private ceremony in 2012 in New York City. From the year 1977 until Rickman's death, they shared a home. They did not have any children.

Illness And Death

Rickman underwent treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer throughout 2005, culminating in a prostatectomy in January 2006. He considered whether to return to the series after the operation, simultaneously with the casting for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Rickman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after a minor stroke in August 2015. He only told his closest friends that he had terminal cancer. He passed away in London on January 14, 2016, at 69. On February 3, 2016, his remains were cremated at the West London Crematorium in Kensal Green. Rima Horton, his wife, received his ashes. Eye in the Sky and Alice Through the Looking Glass, his final two films, and The Limehouse Golem, which would have been his next project, were devoted to his memory.
