Gunn Finally Speaks Out About Refusing To Direct A Superman Movie

Superman: Legacy is in the works with veteran filmmaker James Gunn. Despite being offered the Superman reboot years ago, he declined and went on to direct the suicide squad instead. It has been revealed that he will helm a previously announced franchise reboot. After the exit of Henry Cavill from the franchise, the co-CEO admitted that he initially refused to direct the film for a good reason.
A version of Superman was needed
As he revealed the six months he had worked on the movie before he took over,James Gunn also revealed why he had initially declined Superman. According to him, he initially declined because he could not find a way in that felt unique, fun, and emotional that would have given Superman the dignity he deserved.
According to the producer, he was able to make the movie earlier but needed more resources and inspiration to deliver Superman to fans accurately. At the time, he admitted that Henry Cavill was playing the character in Zack Snyder's direction, and he didn't want to interfere with it. He revealed that he was finally able to find what he needed to bring his version of Superman to life just one year ago.
The end of the Superman era
The film is slated to be released on July 11, 2025, but has yet to be announced with the cast. He will direct Superman: Legacy. Henry Cavill's departure from Superman disheartens fans, but they look forward to seeing what James Gunn has in store with the new movie from Superman.
