The Showrunner Confirmed Alex Russo's Sexuality

It was impossible for Alex Russo not to leave a few tricks on the table. Selena Gomez starred in Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012 as Alex, the teenage wizard in the show. The showrunner addressed rumors about her character being a member of the LGBTQ+ community. 

Peter Murrieta noted that the show wanted to explore Alex’s sexuality deeply, but the era limited that exploration. Peter told the Wizards of Waverly Pod podcast on March 27 that he wished we could have explored what was quite obvious to many of us; Stevie and Alex's relationship.

The Network Has Made Progress

The relationship was clear to all of us, but we couldn't play around with it then. The undeniable sparks between Stevie Nichols and Alex often created waves among Waverly Place fans, leading many to question whether the duo was more than friends. It was pretty close," Peter said on Waverly Place alumnae Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise's podcast. Our best effort was to get close.

Peter acknowledged that the network had made more progressive strides in recent years, even though his show didn't reveal all the layers of Alex and Stevie's relationship. There have been queer characters on Disney Channel," he remarked.
