What happened in the season 2 finale of And Just Like That…?

The season 2 finale of And Just Like That titled The Last Supper Part Two: Entrée featured an unexpected cameo from Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) hosts a farewell party for her old apartment in the climactic episode which also represents her previous life with Mr. Big (Chris Noth) who passed away in the series premiere. 

Samantha who moved to London after a falling out with Carrie calls her former friend to inform her that she was planning to surprise her at the party but her flight was delayed. She then bids goodbye to the apartment over speakerphone and makes a reference to Annabelle Bronstein, an alias she used in an original Sex and the City episode to secretly enter Soho House. 

The cameo lasts around a minute and a half and does not include any direct interaction between Samantha and the other two main characters, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis).

Why did Kim Cattrall leave Sex and the City and And Just Like That…?

Kim Cattrall decided not to return for And Just Like That... after years of reported friction and conflict with her co-stars. Cattrall had previously voiced her dissatisfaction with her character’s narrative and the unequal pay among the cast members. She also turned down participating in a third Sex and the City movie which was eventually abandoned. She told Piers Morgan that she was never friends with her co-stars and that she felt bullied by Parker to join the project in 2017. She also accused Parker of exploiting her brother’s death in 2018 to restore her nice girl image. Cattrall said that she wanted to move on from playing Samantha and explore other roles and opportunities.

The show explained Samantha absence and strained relationship with Carrie in the first episode of And Just Like That… where Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte revealed that they had lost contact with Samantha after Carrie fired her as her publicist. Samantha felt hurt and betrayed by Carrie decision and stopped answering her calls and messages. She then accepted a job in London and severed contact with the rest of the group. Carrie said that she tried to reach out to Samantha multiple times but never heard back from her.

Kim Cattrall managed to keep her cameo a secret by filming it remotely from Canada where she resides. She did not travel to New York or interact with any of the other cast members on set. She also did not appear in any promotional materials and interviews for And Just Like That.
