What are the best new TV shows on the horizon for 2023?

It is no secret that the refrain "too much TV" has been echoing through the culture for the last ten years, and the same is true of 2022, despite increasing rumblings in the streaming market. Even though the ratio of trash to wheat has risen, the number of great shows has also increased. This is just math, baby. We do not have expertise in great math, so it is not great math. According to our calculations, 2023 will likely be another year filled with enough high points that outweigh the lows since television is our area of expertise.

We're looking forward to both points on this list of shows we're excited about next year, most of which we have yet to see and still have equal chances of delighting or disappointing us. That sense of limitless potential might be the best thing in the too-much-TV era. Join us as we await the riches of televisual pleasures in 2023.

True Detective: Night Country | TBC 2023 on HBO Max

A team of detectives led by Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigates the mysterious disappearance of six men operating the Tsalal Artice Research Station in Ennis, Alaska, who vanished. Danvers and Navarro must confront their darkness to find the haunting truths beneath the ice.

Bridgerton season 3 | TBC 2023 on Netflix

During seasons one and two, the show has explored Daphne and Anthony's stories, based on Julia Quinn's eight-book series Bridgerton, which follows the eight siblings as they find love. Although it looks like Bridgerton's third season will follow the third book about Penelope and Colin, producer Shonda Rhimes says they might not follow the same order.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew | TBC 2023 on Disney Plus

According to Dave Filoni, the show Skeleton Crew - which takes place in the same time frame as The Mandalorian - will be intertwined in "weird ways." The show is reportedly in pre-production and is directed by Jon Watts, who directed Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Witcher season 3 | Summer 2023 on Netflix

The second book in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher saga, "The Time of Contempt", is the basis for season 3. The official synopsis from Netflix says: "As monarchs, mages, and beasts compete to capture Ciri of Cintra, Geralt takes her into hiding, determined to keep his newly-reunited family safe from destruction."

Loki season 2 | Summer 2023 on Disney Plus

This is Marvel's first Disney Plus limited series to be renewed for a second season. The first season ended in chaos, with Sylvie's killing of He Who Remains triggering a war across all dimensions. Loki is left stranded in another dimension, where a statue of Kang the Conqueror is located. There is no definitive confirmation of Loki season 2, but it will likely occur in a world where Kang has assumed leadership of the TVA and other timelines.

The Walking Dead: Dead City | June 2023 on AMC, AMC+

With the upcoming spin-off series, The Walking Dead: Dead City, the zombie-infested world's most unlikely duo, Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), will take over Manhattan. Six episodes will make up the miniseries as the survivors attempt to survive an apocalypse in New York. Showrunner Eli Jorné is a writer and producer. According to AMC's most recent TCA panel, Maggie will look for her kidnapped son Hershel with the help of her old enemy Negan (Medina Senghore), who poses as Negan's wife.
