In 1972, he made his screen debut in the movie Come Back Charleston Blue, playing a pastor. That same year, he played Dr Calvin Cross in the movie The Stigma. Next, Phillips appeared in the films "Book of Numbers", "Mr Rico", and "Black Fist". His first notable role was in Coonskin (1975) and opposite Eileen, his character in his 1976 film Sparkle.
