Early Life

Julie Suzanne Chen was born in Queens, New York City, on January 6, 1970. Wang Ling Chen and David Chen were Chinese immigrants, and her maternal grandfather had nine wives and 11 children. Julie grew up with Victoria and Gladys, her two older sisters, and went to St. Francis Preparatory School. Chen went to the University of Southern California after graduating high school in 1987. In 1991, he got a Bachelor's degree in both English and broadcast journalism.

Julie interned for "CBS Morning News" in 1990, where she copied faxes and answered the telephone. Andy Cohen, who later became the presenter of the Bravo late-night talk show "Watch What Happens Life," was one of her fellow interns. Chen began working as a desk assistant for ABC NewsOne in 1991 and was quickly promoted to producer, a position she held for three years. Julie was a news reporter for WDTN-TV in Dayton, Ohio, from 1995 to 1997, and then she returned to "CBS Morning News" in 1999 as an anchor.

In 2000, she joined "The Early Show" and began working alongside Bryant Gumbel, Hannah Storm, Erica Hill, Harry Smith, Jane Clayson, Maggie Rodriguez, and Rene Syler. During this period, she served as an anchor for "CBS Morning News" and "CBS This Morning." Chen was a co-host of "The Early Show" from 2002 to 2010, and after quitting her daily role on the show, she continued until early 2012 as a special contributing anchor. Before becoming an anchor at CBS, Julie served as a reporter and weekend anchor for WCBS-TV in New York City.

Chen began hosting "Big Brother" on CBS in 2000, and as of this writing, more than 780 episodes of the reality series have aired. Julie also hosted "Celebrity Big Brother" from 2018 to 2019, which included Keshia Knight Pulliam, Shannon Elizabeth, Kato Kaelin, Tom Green, and Ryan Lochte as competitors. In September 2018, Julie announced her departure "The Talk," noting in a pre-recorded message, "I was a part of 'The Talk' from its inception nine years ago, and the cast, crew, and staff have grown like family through the years. Currently, though, I must spend more time with my spouse and our small boy. I've therefore chosen to leave 'The Talk'. I'd want to thank everyone in attendance for the fantastic years we've spent together. I will forever treasure the memories we shared."
