Efren Reyes's first significant victory came in the seventh week of the 1983 Philippine Professional Pocket Billiards Championships when he defeated Pepito Dancer with a score of 39–32. Soon after, he relocated to the US to begin his hustler career and gain notoriety abroad. Reyes rose to prominence as one of the top players in the Philippines in the 1990s after triumphing in a number of prestigious competitions in the US, Europe, and his native country.

After defeating Nick Varner in 1994, he became the first non-American to win the US Open Nine Ball Championship.
