Jeffrey Allen Townes was growing up and found listening to his parents unbearably. At the age of seven, he got a job as a newspaper boy to support his family. He got interested in being a DJ at the age of ten years old. Everyone loved his music. He developed a reputation early and, following as a school and block party DJ extraordinaire, Jazzy Jeff was the feature of the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the duo had several golds and platinum-selling albums and singles, earning them the first rap Grammy presented in 1989 for Parents Don't Understand.

Jeff is one of the richest DJs in the world. He went on with his career as a DJ, also founded A Touch of Jazz Production company and became a record producer concentrating on soul and R&B. songs by Smith were produced by Townes, and he also performed on some songs by Smith, such as 'So Fresh' and 'Potnas'. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince won their second Grammy with their most successful single, which rose to number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
