Original Sin showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. With a new slasher drama on HBO Max that centers on another group of teenage girls, this time from Millwood, Aguirre-Sacasa, who previously produced YA hits like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, helped revive the Pretty Little Liars series.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin trailer

The new story for the remake, which starts with a terrible tragedy during the high school spirit dance, was teased in the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin trailer.

The teens engaged in that incident later experience a stalking presence, but as the sinister mystery is revealed, the girls understand that the incidents are somehow related to their parents, with all the evidence pointing to a tragic prom death in 1999.

PLL series

Although the characters and storylines in Original Sin are entirely new, Aguirre-Sacasa previously stated that it is situated in the same universe as Pretty Little Liars. The show's connections to the PLL series weren't quite clear at the time, although there has since been some clarification.

Own identity

Aguirre-Sacasa stated that Easter eggs and allusions to the first season of Pretty Little Liars will appear in the new TVLine interview. However, these won't begin until the second half of season 1.

The writers' decision to only include references to the first two seasons of Pretty Little Liars during the second half of the rookie season is a wise one.

The show needs time to establish its own identity rather than simply capitalizing on the success of its predecessor, and audiences need time to get to know the new teenagers and become familiar with their intricate backstories and personal arcs.

Unique & innovative

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will have an opportunity to offer something unique and innovative because the first episodes will only be about the new show, giving it the possibility to become a YA staple in its own right.

Original show

Original Sin can take a detour and pay homage to the cherished original program once the new characters and plot have been developed. This will draw back viewers and pique the curiosity of new viewers about what happened in Rosewood prior to the chaos in Millwood.

Endearing nostalgia

The reboot's strategy for PLL references and Easter eggs appears to be working, as original star Lucy Hale commended Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin for its well-balanced, endearing nostalgia and its creative, darker take on the plot.

The showrunner's comments suggest that viewers won't learn for sure until they are at least halfway through season 1 even if it is still unknown if the tie-ins to Pretty Little Liars feature cameos from enduring characters.
