Assisting Indiana Jones on the Dial of Destiny as the director recently explained why the Nazis are returning as villains in the action-adventure franchise for the third time. In 1981, George Lucas introduced Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the franchise quickly became a global phenomenon. Harrison Ford will reprise his thrill-seeking archeologist. This will be the fifth and final film in the series, having spawned three sequels.

Assisting Indiana Jones on the Dial of Destiny as director spoke at Star Wars Celebration 2023 about why Nazis are again playing villains. According to the director, the Nazis are not only intrinsic to the Indiana Jones franchise, but they are also extremely relevant to our time.

A rousing action-adventure romp set in 1936, Raiders of the Lost Ark is about Jones battling Nazis to rescue the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. While Lucas and Spielberg dropped the classic villains in the 1984 Indiana Jones film Temple of Doom in favor of Thuggees, in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, they brought back the 20th Century villains. It is about a Jewish businessman trying to find the Holy Grail in cahoots with the Nazis.

Mangold's interview about his experience

This film series' thematic bookend would provide Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with a complete circle of the franchise. In his interview, Mangold noted that the use of fascist groups as villains continues to be relevant today since many similar radical groups have become stronger in recent years. Several neo-Nazi groups have risen within nations that defeated Adolf Hitler and his totalitarian regime in the wake of the recent political climate and the rise in antisemitism in parts of the United States.

Disney has confirmed that the final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise will be Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. As the Nazis played such a crucial role in that experience, Mangold and the film's writers likely will attempt to invoke nostalgia by highlighting what made the original film so great.
