J. New Orleans Hornets selected R. He was one of the nine players in the draft straight out of school. In his first season, J.R was named the Western Conference Rookie of the month. He scored 10.3 points, two rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.

In 2005 J.R was asked to participate in 2005's Slam Dunk Contest.

The second season was a little off for Smith. His stats went down to 7.7 per game.
