Zoo: An excellent place to study the habits of Human Beings

Our family went to the Columbus Zoo for the first time this past fall. The Zoo has been on my list for a while because it is known as one of the best in the country. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is located in Columbus Ohio and opened in 1927.

The zoo is operated by the Zoological park association which also operates the wilds in Southeastern Ohio. Columbus Zoo is best known for Jungle Jack Hanna who used to be director of the zoo. They are the subject of the National Geographic series, secrets of the zoo.

The first zoo in Columbus, known as “The Zoo” was operated by the Columbus zoological company. The zoo’s original entrance can also be seen on North High Street road. Jack Hanna became the director of the Columbus zoo in 1978 and remained the director until 1993.

Is the Zoo is Huge!!!

Be prepared to walk because there is a lot of ground to cover. The layout is pretty flat which is great if you have a younger family. The hardest part is trying to figure out what exhibits you want to see first.

Can see a lot of things as many times as we visit!!!

Our strategy was to start at the right of the entrance and work our way around back to the entrance. Also, allow a lot of time for your visit. Our family can usually go through museums and zoos relatively quickly but this zoo even took us longer than we expected which is a good thing.

“Heart of Africa”

The “Heart of Africa” region is located to the north and east of the zoo. The area encompasses 43 acres of land, and feature many African plains animals. One exhibit in the new regions is lions, which were moved in order to accommodate Asia Quest, as well as giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, and monkeys.

Did you know about the Zoo Manifestation?

The Columbus Zoo is divided into regions, each housing animals from a particular region of the world. Each region is themed for the particular area of the world they are representing, though older regions are themed less than the newly constructed ones. There are three modes of transportation through the Zoo other than walking.

Does the Zoo have any Shores and Aquariums?

The shores region is most well known for the fish and manatee aquariums, known as “Discovery Reef” and “Manatee Coast”. In addition to the indoor aquariums, the shore region also features exhibits of American flamingos, American alligators, and Humboldt penguins.

Voyage to Australia and the Islands

The Australian region is located on the far west side of the zoo, lying along the east bank of the Scioto River. The habitat is at ground level, which allows visitors to walk through the actual habitat along with the kangaroos. The exhibit allows visitors to purchase a cup of nectar and feed the birds.

The Columbus zoo is Jack Hanna’s Home Zoo

He was the director of the zoo from 1978-1993 and still does educational programs at the zoo several times a year. I remember watching his television show as a kid. He does such a great job of educating and sharing his passion.
