New Twitter Policy

The impact continues a day after Twitter drafted a new policy outlining its decision to suspend accounts that track Elon Musk's private jet.

Twitter took down open-source rival Mastodon on Thursday afternoon. Shortly before his suspension, according to the archives, Mastodon (@joinmastodon) tweeted a link to his service's Jet Tracking account.

As of 6:30 PM PT, many links to Mastodon on Twitter are dead and flagged as "potentially harmful." Tweet links to servers without his Mastodon name in the domain still appeared to work. Banned domains include mstdn. social and mastodon.social, but links to the journal. host, etc., still work.

As Twitter alternatives gained momentum, many Twitter users added Mastodon profile links to their profiles. Links to blocked Mastodon servers are disabled with the text "Warning: This link may not be secure."

The now-banned Twitter account @ElonJet, owned by Florida student Jack Sweeney, also runs many other flight tracking bots that gather information from public data. Sweeney's account was also suspended from Twitter, along with many bots, including one that posted an update on his CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg.

Elon Musk hit a different tone with this account in early November but has since scaled back in light of his personal preferences, Twitter's platform adjusting his policies. . "My commitment to freedom of expression extends to not suspending the account that tracks my plane even though it poses a direct risk to personal safety," he tweeted. The tweet is accompanied by a community note explaining @ElonJet's story.

The Personal & Political Preferences

Elon Musk's personal and political preferences have guided many of Twitter's policies since the de facto new owner took over the company. Elon Musk initially said Twitter would allow all non-illegal content but has since suspended certain accounts for personal reasons.

Elon Musk revived a wave of prominent Nazis and white supremacists earlier this month but still stands apart from Sandy Hook's conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and has a personal as his father. I quoted my experience.

As a federated open-source Twitter alternative, Mastodon doesn't allow one person to set the rules for the entire platform. Mastodon's servers are independent but open instances of social networks run by people who can set the rules. However, users can switch to another server if they agree with these decisions.
