An underwater volcano in Tonga has erupted for the third time in four days. It causes minor damage from New Zealand to Santa Cruz, California. The sonic boom from the powerful volcanic eruption was heard as far away as Alaska. It was potentially jeopardizing surveillance flights capacity to access the damage that was caused by the huge explosion and tsunami that struck the Pacific island nation on January 15. It was an uninhabited volcanic island that existed in the South Pacific from 2009-2022. It was located 65 km north of Tongatapu, Tonga’s main island. The 2009 volcanic eruption merged the Previously twin island of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Hapai, and a more explosive eruption separated the islands again and reduced them in size in 2022. The island is formed at the convergent boundary where the Pacific Plate subducts under the Indo-Australian Plate.

According to Geologists, Saturday’s explosion was possibly the largest on the Earth in more than three decades. According to the IMD, the tremendous shockwaves caused by the eruption of Hunga-Tonga-Hungapai in Tonga were also felt across India. The US geological survey estimated the eruption caused a magnitude 5.8 earthquake equivalent. According to experts, it was one of the most powerful explosions of the 21st century.

Why are the volcano’s eruptions so highly explosive?

The Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haápai volcano is an undersea volcano. When magma rises into seawater slowly, even at a temperature of about 1200 degrees Celsius, steam forms between the magma and water. This provides insulation to allow the outer surface of the magma to cool. But, it is not the case when magma is blasted out of the ground full of volcanic gas. If magma enters the water rapidly, steam layers get disrupted, bringing the hot magma in direct contact with cold water. Volcano researchers called it ‘fuel coolant interaction.’ This process is similar to that of the weapons-grade chemical reaction. And the chain reaction begins when extremely violent blasts tear the magma apart, new magma exposing fresh hot interior surfaces to water, ultimately causing blasts with supersonic speeds.

Now, What can we expect?

It remains unclear if this is the climax! We are still in the middle of this major volcanic eruptive sequence, and many aspects remain puzzled, partly because ash clouds currently cover the island. Hence we could be in for several weeks or even years of major volcanic unrest from the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haápai volcano.
