Enthusiastic welcome to the Yuan Wang 5!

On Tuesday, a Chinese research ship docked at a southern Sri Lankan port, Beijing, leased from the government. New Delhi and Beijing are in tension on ship arrival as they spent billions of dollars on development and dealing with Sri Lanka, an island of 22 million people. Reason for the presence of the ship!

The ship is used for scientific research says China, but the US Defense Department says the ship is under the command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which is used to track satellites and missile launches. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry said the government; the ship had been permitted to dock on the condition that no scientific research was conducted in Sri Lankan waters.

About the ship!

The Yuan Wang space support ships track the satellite and intercontinental ballistic missile launches. At Hambantota port, the ship's arrival was controversial, and China leased the port from Sri Lanka in 2017 for 99 years. It happened when Colombo failed to pay the facility's construction debts.

A former US Navy captain and former director of operations at the US Pacific Command's Joint Intelligence Center, Carl Schuster said the ship was not sent as a spy; her primary mission was satellite tracking and monitoring PRC rocket launches, telemetry, and satellite status. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ship is conducting scientific research following international law. It does not affect any country's security and economic interest and is not involved in any of the third parties.

Rising tension between India-China!

India and China had rising tension with the Yuan Wang 5, where both have financially supported Colombo as it experienced its worst financial crisis in decades. India provides crucial assistance to Sri Lanka as it suffers from food, medicine, and fuel shortages lending $4 billion in credit lines. China is also a creditor of Sri Lanka as it had put some efforts into restructuring its debt to secure a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.

In recent years, Indian and China have long been tense for a prolonged military standoff along their shared Himalayan border has claimed dozens of lives. Washington and New Delhi hold a joint military exercise less than 100 kilometers from the disputed India-China border between the two nuclear-armed powers.

Influence of China in Sri Lanka!

In no particular order, Sri Lanka is caught between a rock and a hard place, referring to India and China. The Chinese and India had pressured them as they could not afford to lose any help. Sri Lankan used China as a vehicle for infrastructure-led economic development. China spent nearly $15 billion in Sri Lanka between 2005 and 2017 as it struggled to pay back its debt and agreed on the long-term port deal. So China tested the terms of the leasing agreement by sending a craft with satellites on board the high capability.
