Allegations made against Superintendent Hal Harrell

On Monday evening, the school board convened an extra meeting only to discuss the allegations made against Superintendent Hal Harrell. Before the session began, Adam Martinez stated to CNN that in the wake of a report released by the Texas statehouse investigating the mass shooting that occurred on May 24, he wants "accountability," and "that starts with the superintendent and everyone below him." In its report, the investigative committee of the Texas House of Representatives cited Robb Elementary's "culture of non-compliance with safety policies," which included the school's failure to adequately prepare for the possibility of an armed intruder and the widespread practice of leaving doors unlocked. Since 2012, this slaughter was the bloodiest attack on a school in the United States.

Pete Arredondo as the school district's police chief

The meeting of the school board started with a public comment period that lasted around ten minutes before moving into a closed session. After a little over three hours had passed, board members finally made their appearance. A move to require the superintendent to furnish the board with the names of individuals or groups that could assess the school district's administrative processes on accountability was brought forth by a single member of the board. Additionally, it instructed him to plan a board town hall meeting so that members of the public can attend and discuss concerns pertaining to the beginning of the new school year. Additionally, the board decided to collaborate with Harrell on the inquiry of the school's police force. The vote was unanimous in favor of the proposition. Families and members of the community voiced their frustration at the conclusion of the meeting, with some stating that the three hours had been wasted because nothing had been accomplished. On Wednesday, the board is planning to hold yet another meeting at which they will discuss whether or not to fire Pete Arredondo as the school district's police chief.

Arredondo, on-scene commander

Officials have stated that Arredondo was the on-scene commander during the incident, but the chief has contested this claim, stating that he did not believe he was in charge and that he did not believe he was in command. After more than an hour had passed since the shooting began, responding officers from different agencies entered the classroom to confront the shooter. This delay in entering the classroom is something that some law enforcement experts believe may have resulted in the loss of lives. Arredondo, who is now absent from work without pay due to Harrell's recommendation, should be terminated. Due to the requests made by Arredondo's counsel regarding his right to due process, the school board has twice postponed the hearing over Arredondo's potential termination.
