The G20 summit

The host of the G20 summit said on Thursday that both the presidents of China and Russia intend to attend the summit in November, which will set up a high-profile showdown with Vice President Joe Biden.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Indonesian President Joko Widodo stated that he had obtained promises from both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin that they would attend the summit, which is slated to take place in November on the island of Bali in Indonesia.

According to Bloomberg

"Xi Jinping is going to visit. Additionally, President Putin has confirmed to me that he will attend, "According to Bloomberg, he is quoted as saying. The participation of the two authoritarian presidents at the summit, which will be the first G20 meeting since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the increase in tensions around the issue of Taiwan, will significantly raise the stakes for the meeting.

Neither Putin nor Xi attended the G20 meeting in Rome the year before. As the Covid-19 outbreak winds down, Xi has recently started traveling outside mainland China.

The White House has not officially stated that Vice President Biden will go to Asia for the meeting, but officials indicate that he is likely to participate.

Summits in Asia

With an eye toward November's string of summits in Asia—the G20 in Bali, a meeting of Southeast Asian leaders in Cambodia, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Thailand—officials from the United States and China have been working in the background to arrange the first face-to-face meeting between Vice President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping since Vice President Biden took office.

Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan a few weeks ago, tensions between the United States capital and the Chinese government have been rising.

China has ramped up its military exercises and conducted more weapon testing while cutting off certain lines of contact with the United States.

Biden and Xi reached an agreement

During their most recent conversation over the phone, Biden and Xi agreed that they would work toward meeting in person.

Even when tensions are high, Vice President Biden believes it is important to maintain a regular meeting schedule with his counterparts from other countries.

It was a topic of discussion among other world leaders at the G7 summit in Germany earlier this summer and at a NATO summit in Brussels in March.

Biden and his advisers have been discussing how to approach the G20 for months, and if Putin were to attend, those conversations would continue.

The G7 meeting

According to the officials, the leaders who attended the G7 meeting specifically discussed methods to display a united front against Russia at the conference that will take place in November.

Vice President Joe Biden has advocated for Russia's expulsion from the G20, and senior members of President Trump's administration have been known to leave meetings of the G20 while Russian representatives are in attendance.

But skipping the G20 meeting was never a serious option for Biden and his team because they did not want to create the impression that they were giving Putin the upper hand in the conversation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in G7 nations

As a demonstration of support for Ukraine, the United States and the other members of the G7 nations lobbied Indonesia to extend an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in the event as a guest participant.

In April, when the Russian delegate began his prepared remarks at a closed-door G20 session in Washington, finance ministers from multiple nations, including U.S.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, walked out in a protest against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

This action was taken in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Ahead of the summit, officials from the United States stated that Yellen would not take part in certain sections of the gathering that featured representatives from RussiaU.S.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken encouraged his counterparts at a conference of G20 foreign ministers a month ago to take a harsher stance on Russia.

He said that for the G20 to stay relevant, it must hold Moscow accountable for the invasion.
