The Republican governor of Indiana

On Sunday, the Republican governor of Indiana, Eric Holcomb, announced that he had arrived in Taiwan. He is the most recent politician from the United States to visit the self-governing island amidst the rising tensions with China.

Along with a photo of the two of them together, the governor of the state shared the following message on Twitter: "I appreciate the warm welcome to Taiwan from Douglas Hsu, Taiwan Director of North American Affairs."

The federal CHIPS Act

Following the signing of the federal CHIPS Act and the recent announcement that a Taiwanese semiconductor company will open a design center in Indiana, Holcomb and a delegation that includes Indiana's commerce secretary are currently in the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, to kick off an "economic development trip" in Taiwan and South Korea, according to a statement released by his office.

The trip comes from the signing of the federal CHIPS Act and the recent announcement. According to the spokesperson for the presidential office in Taiwan, Chang Tun-Han, Holcomb is scheduled to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning local time in Taiwan.

According to another statement made by the representative, Holcomb and Tsai would talk about "economic, commercial, technological, and cultural cooperation."

The visit by Holcomb

The visit by Holcomb comes on the heels of a trip to Taiwan made by Nancy Pelosi earlier this month. Pelosi made history by becoming the first US House speaker in 25 years to visit the island during a period in which relations between Washington and Beijing have been particularly fraught.

China's response was to launch significant military drills surrounding Taiwan and to stop vital diplomatic ties with the United States in response to her visit, which had outraged China.

To "reaffirm the support that the United States has for Taiwan" and "encourage stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait," a second congressional delegation from the United States, comprised of members of both parties and led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, traveled to Taipei on Sunday.

The United States will continue to recognize the People's Republic of China.

The Chinese Communist Party, which rules China, considers Taiwan a part of China's territory, even though it has never governed the democratic island. Beijing has long promised to "reunify" Taiwan with the rest of China, even if this requires force.

The United States will continue to recognize the People's Republic of China as the only legal government in China, according to the White House, which has stated that the "One China" policy of the United States would not be altered in any way.

The United States of America (USA) keeps up friendly but unofficial ties with Taiwan and is legally obligated to supply Taiwan with defense armaments. However, to maintain what is known as "strategic ambiguity," the United States government continues to avoid directly addressing whether or not it would use military force to protect Taiwan in the case of an invasion by China.

According to a statement released by his office, Governor Holcomb is the first governor of the United States to visit Taiwan since the year 2019 and the first governor of Indiana to travel to the island in 17 years.

Indiana's economic and academic partnerships

During his time in Asia, he intends to meet with Taiwanese and South Korean government members and representatives from various businesses and academic organizations. According to a statement released by his office, "The delegation will focus on strengthening Indiana's economic and academic partnerships and reinforcing the state's commitment to innovation," as well as "committing to working together to build the economy of the future on an international scale."
