The show was initially meant to be a feature film.

Good things don't come easy. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk took almost six months to write the first two episodes alone. While he finished the first draft of the script in 2009, he worked on it since 2008.

The character, Ji-young, played by LeeYoo-Mi, was initially a male character. However, Hwang thought that a female character would be more sensible to reflect the ties between women.
