A 25-year-old pizza delivery man is being hailed as a superhero by local authorities after risking his life to save two children and three teenagers trapped inside a burning home in Indiana.

Per a news release from the Lafayette Police Department, Nicholas Bostic was driving in Lafayette, Indiana, just after midnight on July 11 when he saw a house on fire and pulled into the home’s driveway.

According to the release, Nicholas could enter through an open back door and began to check if anyone was in the home. Nicholas headed upstairs and got four children, ages one to 18 years old, asleep and woke them, helping them escape the home.

But when they told him that the 6-year-old was still inside, Nicholas headed back into the blaze, and despite thick smoke, he found her. Police said Nicholas could not find a way out on the main floor as the flames intensified, and the two would be forced to jump out of a 2nd-floor window to safety. The release said Bostic had to break the window with his hand to get it open.

Nicholas told CNN affiliate WLFI, “I did try to find the back door, but I couldn’t find it and I didn’t want to get too lost.”Lafayette Police Department shared a dramatic video on social media showing the moment firefighters arrived at the home. Nicholas is later seen walking from the burning house with the girl in his arms.

As he approaches fire department personnel, he hands the girl to the firefighters and sits on the ground. “Is the baby ok? Please tell me that baby is ok,” Nicholas asks as he is being treated. A police officer confirmed and replied, “You did good, dude.”

Officials say Nicholas was ‘seriously injured during the incident. He suffered severely from smoke inhalation and even gravely cut his right arm. On the other hand, the girl “was miraculously mostly uninjured,” per release. Nicholas told WLFI, “The bottom of my hands are blistered like I grabbed something hot. I recall seeing flames through the window while punching it out.”

Lafayette Police’s spokesperson said the family is doing well and has since met with Nicholas at a friend’s house and church. The parents had left for the evening, and the 18-year-old was with the children, the cop said.
