Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab’s Ferozepur district was a major security breach. His cavalcade was struck on a flyover for almost 20 minutes due to blockade protesting farmers. This incident has brought attention to the agencies in charge of the PM’s security and Protocols set for his travel. Let’s learn more about the security planning implemented for the PM of India.

Who is the sole responsible for PM’s security arrangements before any events?

Being one of the highest positions in the Indian Government, the Prime Minister of India gets an extensive arrangement as a part of perks and privileges. According to the ‘Blue Book’ issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Special Protection Group (SPG) is the sole one responsible for planning the Prime Minister’s security arrangements. The SPG protects the PM at all times, both in India and abroad, and his immediate family members reside with them at their official residence.

How do they plan a security structure for the PM?

The Blue Book mandates that three days before any visit by the PM, the SPG holds an Advance Security Liaison with everyone in security events, including state police, District Magistrate, and Intelligence Bureau officials. There is a law for this, called the SPG Act, that mandates the State Governments to assist the group. Everything, including travel and contingency arrangements, are discussed here, and even small details need to be chalked out.

Events and arrangements are Pre-decided

Who are all will be the parts of the convoy is also decided in advance. According to the reports, the first car is the advance pilot warning vehicle, a technical car followed by the VVIP car, the ambulance, and other cars. There is also a spare car as part of the convoy. The convoy apparently also has two dummy cars that are identical to that of the actual PM’s vehicle to confuse the attackers in the event of a misfortune.

The Best of the best personnel

The convoy which is chosen for his security arrangements will come from Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). They are the best of the best security personnel.

Can you identify PM’s security personnel?

They are like Black-cats. They are always dressed in black formal business suits with sunglasses. They should always carry a two-way encrypted communication earpiece and concealed handguns.

The total cost incurred on the PM’s security

This is quite an elaborate security arrangement. After a significant hike in the budgetary allocation for 2020-2021, the cost of the SPG for PM stands at Rs.592 cr. If we calculate it as per day, it is about Rs. 1.62 cr, or if we calculate it per hour, it is Rs.6.75 lakh an hour.
