Denying women’s request for a morning-after pill, Minnesota pharmacist on trial!

A woman's rights were violated when a pharmacist denied her request in 2019 to fill a prescription for emergency contraception, where a trial is expected in Minnesota. A mother of five from McGregor, Andrea Anderson, sued under the Minnesota Human Rights Act after the pharmacist refused her request based on his religious beliefs.

Right to contraception!

Last week, the trial in the civil case amid a national political debate about contraception under federal law, with the U.S House passing a bill that would guarantee the right to contraception. The U.S Supreme Court, which already erased federal abortion rights, could go further and limit the use of contraception.

Longtime Pharmacist!

In January 2019, Anderson brought her prescription for a morning-after pill to the Thirty White pharmacy in McGregor. George Badeaux Longtime pharmacist told her he could not fill the prescription based on his beliefs. Anderson got her prescription filled at a pharmacy in Brainerd, making the round-trip of more than 100 miles in wintry driving conditions.

The pharmaceutical company asked for permission!

Badeaux was allowed to explain his religious beliefs to the injury. For the first time, a pharmaceutical company asked for permission last month to sell a birth control pill in the U.S. HRA Pharma’s application sets up high stakes for health regulators amid legal and political battles for women's reproductive health.

The HRA Company said the timing was unrelated to the Supreme Court's recent overturning of Roe v. Wade. Across the U.S., women have been stocking up on emergency contraceptives after the Supreme Court’s ruling.
