Early Life

Viggo's full name is Viggo Peter Mortenson was born in Watertown New York. He was born on October 20, 1958, to his parents, Grace and Viggo Mortensen Sr. his mum is an American, and his Father was Danish. Viggo is the oldest brother of all three sons of Grace and Viggo Sr.

His family moved to places before they settled in Argentina. Viggo did his schooling at a Primary School in South America. 

Viggo's parents divorced in 1969, and his mother took the children and moved to America. Hence Viggo spent the rest of his childhood with his brothers in New York. He went to Watertown High school and graduated in 1976. He enrolled in Lawrence University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Political Science.

After that, he moved to England and spent two years living in England, Spain, and Denmark. Later he returned to the USA to make a career in acting.

Mortenson got his acting break in 1985 for the movie, "The Purple Rose of Cairo."

However, his shots were cut from the movie. So his first onscreen role was seen in the movie Witness, released in 1995. The same year he was also cast in a daily soap "Search for Tomorrow"

In the 1990s, Mortenson appeared in several movies, including young Guns II," and many more.

However, in the movie G.I. Jane," his character Master Chief John Urgayle, opposite Demi Moore, is iconic.

In 1999 Mortenson was seen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy as Aragorn, directed by Peter Jackson. For his role in the movie, he became famous.

In 2007 he appeared in Eastern Promises, a film by David Cronenberg. The movie earned Mortenson an Award for the category Best Performance in a British Independent Film award. Mortenson was also nominated for Academy Award for Best Actor for his role.

In 2009 Mortenson got a role in The Road, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy. The same year he starred in another David Cronenberg movie, "A Dangerous Method."

He also performed in the documentary film "The People Speak" the movie was narrated in the form of music, letters, dramas, and speeches of Americans to tell the story. The movie tells the story of America through the women's perspective of Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

In 2016 Mortenson was seen in the movie Captain Fantastic" in 2018 he was seen in Green Book." Mortenson, however, received his second and third nominations for AcademyAwards for these movies.

In 2020 the news that Mortenson received San Sebastian's Donostia Award for the 68th edition of the film festival was announced. While Mortenson picks the awards, he would also present his directorial debut for "Falling" at the festival. It was a European movie debut that stars Mortensen, Laura Linney, and David Cronenberg. The film shares a story of a conservative father. He moves from his rural family to live with his gay son's urban family.

Personal Life

Mortenson has dual American Danish citizenship; hence he can speak various languages English, Danish, French, and Spanish. He can also speak Italian, Swedish, and a bit of Catalan. When he received an award, he gave a speech. 

Mortenson met Exene Cervenka in 1986. She is an actress and singer. They met on sets of Salvation. They got married on July 8, 1987. On January 28, 1988, they welcomed their baby boy Henry Blake Mortensen. They parted ways in 1992 and divorced in 1997.
His son played the role of Henry Ince, his onscreen son, in the movie Crimson Tide in 1995.
In 1999 Mortenson got a call for a movie in which he had no interest. It was "The Lord of the Rings " initially. He denied the lengthy shots in New Zealand, as he had to be away from his son. However, Henry convinced his father to do it as the books drew him. 
In the extended version of The Lord of the Rings, he sings the song for the fellowship.

Mortenson also collaborated with guitarist Buckethead for several albums and released his label through Perceval Press.

Mortenson founded the Perceval Press publishing house to help artist publish their work who have difficulty finding one. His publishing house is named after a knight from the legend of King Arthur. He spent the money from Lord of Rings to find his company.

Mortenson is an artist and Author of "Ten Last Night", a printed poetry for which he is famous.

In 2006 Mortenson received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, St. Lawrence University.

In 2009, he was in a relationship with his girlfriend, Ariadna Gil. The two are living in Spain now.
