Thomas John Woodward, known as Tom Jones, was born on June 7, 1940, in Glamorgan, South Wales. He was raised by his mother, Freda, father, Thomas, and sister, Sheila, and at an early age, he started singing at weddings and family events. Tom participated in the choir while attending Wood Road Infants, Wood Road Junior, and Pontypridd Central Secondary Modern Schools. He claims that after receiving a TB diagnosis at age 12, he "spent two years in bed recuperating." Tom married Linda Trenchard, his pregnant fiancée when he was 16. He dropped out of school and worked for a construction firm and a glove factory to support Linda and their newborn son, Mark.

Started singing for a Welsh band

Tom started singing lead for the Welsh band Tommy Scott and the Senators in 1963. The following year, the band worked with producer Joe Meek to record a few songs, but despite Meek's best efforts, record labels showed little interest in the band. Gordon Mills became Tom's manager after seeing the band perform at the Top Hat in Cwmtillery. After taking Tom to London, he persuaded him to use the name "Tom Jones." Jones joined Decca in 1964, releasing the song "Chills and Fever" around the end of the year. His second single, "It's Not Unusual," became a worldwide smash in 1965 courtesy of Radio Caroline, a pirate radio station, and peaked at #10 on the U.S. charts.
