He was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on March 21, 1958, the fourth of five children of Curtis and Concetta Cardone. During his high school years, Cardone consumed narcotics and was frequently expelled for being intoxicated, as was his twin brother Gary. When he was ten, his father died, leaving his family poor. His parents assured him that he would finish his education, and he was credited with a $40,000 debt when he graduated from McNeese State University in 1981. 

At age 23, Grant Cardone was robbed, assaulted, and left for dead after consuming and overdosing on drugs many times after beginning his career as a car salesperson and being dismissed from four jobs consecutively. After five years in rehab, Grant Cardone opened his first company, the Cardone Group, providing consulting services to car dealerships throughout the country. His mother's request forced him into rehabilitation. A successful business turned him into a millionaire quickly. 

In his first real estate venture, he rented out a single-family house he purchased in Houston shortly before he turned 30. The investment failed, but that did not stop Grant Cardone from pursuing his interests in the future. After five years in San Diego, the investment was completed when he spent $1.9 million to buy an apartment complex. He later acquired a second apartment building. Through his company, Cardone Capital, he acquired 1,016 apartments worth $58 million by 2012.
