His father, Louis Severson Jr., and his mother, Karen Vedder, divorced in 1965, and after separation, his mother swiftly remarried a man named Peter Mueller. Eddie grew up with the belief that Mueller was his genetic father. 

During the mid-1970s, he shifted to San Diego with his siblings and parents. He got his first guitar on his 12th birthday from his mother, and as a teen, he used to play surfing and sing for comfort. After his mother and stepfather divorced, he was in his later childhood and decided to live with his father in San Diego while his mother was with siblings in Chicago. 

Through his senior years at 'San Dieguito High School, Eddie lived in an apartment with the support of his night duty at the drug store. Later, he found that Mueller was not his genetic father, but the biological father named, Louis Severson Jr. had passed away by that time. He skipped high school, returned to Chicago, and changed his name from his mother's maiden name to Eddie Vedder. He gained his GED in the first 80s.

In 1984, Eddie Vedder returned to San Diego and got various odd jobs aside from continuing a professional career in music. Firstly, he began recording a demo and on-and-off tapes in different bands in San Diego. As time flies, he held the status of vocalist in the Band of Bad Radio in 1988. Though, his period of Bad Radio did not remand long-lasting. 

In the meantime, he connected with a former drummer named Jack Irons, who was a fame of Red-Hot Chili Peppers and afterward motivated Eddie to give a try to a band in Seattle. In 1991, he released 'Temple of the Dog' through A&M Records. Cornell and Vedder performed this song together on October 26, 2014, at the Bridge School Benefit.
