Don Young was an American politician from the state of Alaska. Russell Lawhead ‘Cy’ Young Sr. and Arlene Marcella Bucy were his parents. He is the second of three sons.

In 1952, he earned an associate degree in education from Yuba College.

In 1958, he got a bachelor’s degree from Chico State College.

From 1955 to 1975, he served in the Army.

In 1959, Young moved to Alaska and settled in Fort Yukon, on the Yukon River, which is seven miles above the Arctic Circle. He made a living in construction, trapping, fishing, and gold mining.

He captioned a tugboat and ran a barge operation to deliver the products to villages along the Yukon River. 

In 1964, he was elected as mayor of Fort Yukon, serving until 1968.

From 1967 to 1971, Young was in service of the Alaska House of Representatives.

From 1971 to 1973, he served in the Alaska Senate. 

He is well known Republican Politician who became U.S. Representative for Alaska's at-large congressional district in 1973. He is often called Alaska's third senator. In 2012, he began his 22nd consecutive term.

Political positions

Young believed that abortion should be legal. Only when the pregnancy results from rape or incest or when her pregnancy endangers a woman's life.

Young praises Trump to acknowledge the importance of development in the Arctic OCS.

He questioned public funding of the arts. Later, he supported legislation to increase funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Young and Stevens set aside $223 million to build the Gravina Island Bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island in 2005, containing Ketchikan's airport.

Young supported several efforts to reform cannabis laws.

He voted for the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. During World war II, it provided amends for Japanese Americans imprisoned by the U.S. government

Young said, 'the biggest scam since the Teapot Dome as he did not believe in anthropogenic climate change and global warming.

In the 2020 presidential election, Young was one of the first Republicans to acknowledge and also to congratulate Joe Biden on his victory.
Young believes the Environmental Protection Agency that should not regulate greenhouse gases that kill jobs.

In 2007, Young also voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

On August 22, 2020, Young voted for a $25 billion relief package for the U.S. Post Office. He was one among the 26 Republicans.

Personal Life

Young married Lula Fredson in 1963, who worked as a bookkeeper in Fort Yukon. The couple had two daughters and were members of the Episcopal Church. On August 1, 2009, Lula died at the age of 67. 

On August 17, 2014, Young got engaged to Anne Garland Walton. She is a flight nurse from Fairbanks. On June 9, 2015, they got married. Anne was 76 years old at the time of her marriage to Young.

Death

Young was on the flight from Los Angeles to Seattle on March 18, 2022. Suddenly, he lost consciousness at the end of the flight and was declared dead.

He was on the flight with his wife, Anne Garland, and communications director Zack Brown.
On March 29, 2022, Young lay in state in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall before his memorial service.
