Life and career

Porter was raised in Nebraska and Oregon, in addition to his birthplace of Miami, Oklahoma, throughout his formative years. He lied about his age when he joined the Oklahoma National Guard when he was only 14 years old and was promoted to lieutenant. During World War II, he was a member of the military who served as a combat photographer and appeared in training films.

At the age of 17, Porter debuted in a series of dramatic roles on the radio, which marked the beginning of his career as an actor. In 1936, he performed in Elizabeth the Queen, written by Maxwell Anderson and staged in Portland. After that, he went on to perform in almost 200 different plays. Any Wednesday (1968), Plaza Suite (1967), and The Front Page (1968) are some of his credits from his time on Broadway (1963).

Before getting the role of Peter Sands, Susan Camille MacNamara's (Ann Sothern) boss on the 1950s sitcom Private Secretary, he had several film appearances in the 1940s. After some time, a revamped version of the series was aired under the name The Ann Sothern Show. Many of the same performers were in it, including Porter in the role of James Devery, the hotel manager at the posh New York City hotel where the action took place.

In subsequent years, he appeared as a guest star on episodes of shows such as Green Acres, Love, American Style, The Mod Squad, Barnaby Jones, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hawaii Five-O, Three's Company (on which he played Jack Tripper's uncle), and Switch. Porter also had a successful theatre career, which included starring in the 1964 play Any Wednesday opposite Sandy Dennis and Gene Hackman. This play was a long-running hit.

Porter also made an appearance in several films, some of which include: The Turning Point (1952), Our Miss Brooks (1956), Gidget Goes to Rome (playing Russell Lawrence two years before repeating the role in the series), and Live a Little, Love a Little (1968), in which he starred alongside Elvis Presley.

In the 1972 film, "The Candidate," he played the role of Crocker Jarmon, an unscrupulous and dishonest United States Senator challenged by a character that Robert Redford plays in the film. The New Statesman observed that Porter performed "a beautiful performance of Jarman performing a beautiful performance" about a sequence in which Jarmon gave an emotional monologue in which he acted as though he were being sincere.

In the film adaptation of Mame, released in 1974 and starring Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur, Porter performed the role of Mr Upson. Porter made his final appearance in front of the camera in an episode of CBS Summer Playhouse in 1988.
