Don Piper and Cecil Murphey collaborated on the 2004 Christian novel 90 Minutes in Heaven. The book recounts the author's death and resurrection in 1989. 90 Minutes in Heaven was a New York Times Best Seller for almost five years and sold over six million copies. The novel was also made into a feature-length film released in theatres on September 11, 2015.

On January 18, 1989, while driving home from a conference in Texas, Baptist minister Don Piper was hit by a semi-trailer truck while crossing a bridge. Piper claims that the roof of his automobile crushed him, that the steering wheel stabbed his chest, and that the dashboard collapsed on his legs. When paramedics arrived, they found no life signal in Piper and wrapped him with a tarp as a fellow pastor prayed over him until the medical examiner arrived.

Piper claims he went straight to Heaven and experienced incredible and lovely things, such as visiting family members such as his great-grandmother and joining a Heavenly Choir that continued into the Gates of Heaven.
