Early Life

Don Murray was born in California, USA. Dennis Aloisius Murray and Ethel Cook were his parents. Dennis worked as a dance director and stage manager, and Ethel was a singer.

Ethel served as a performer for the Ziegfeld Follies, an elaborate theatrical revue production on Broadway. 

Murray attended the East Rockaway High School in East Rockaway, a village in Nassau County, New york. He served as a member of the school's football team, track team, and glee club in high school.

In 1947, at the age of 18, he graduated. Later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan, New york. In 1952, he graduated.

Murray began his career at Cardiff City and made his debut at the age of 17 years. In 1951, he made his Broadway debut cast as Jack Hunter in a stage version of the play 'The Rose Tattoo' by Tennessee Williams from 1911 - 1983.

In this play, Hunter is a sailor, the boyfriend of Rosa Delle Rose, and the daughter of the play's female protagonist. His career got interrupted when he was in the United States military.

During the Korean War, 1950 - 1953, he was a member of the Brethren Church. He was assigned to an alternative service in Europe. In 1954, he was honorably discharged from the military and resumed his acting career. 

In 1956, Murray starred in their debut, the romantic drama film 'Bus Stop'. It is the film with an adaptation of a 1955 theatrical play by William Inge.

In 1957, he starred as reserved, married bookkeeper Charlie Sampson in The Bachelor Party.

He starred in many roles, like Johnny Pope in the drama A Hatful of rain. He is portrayed as Johnny Pope, which is a morphine-addicted Korean War veteran. The film was the first to show the effects of drug abuse. 

In 1962, he starred in a film version of a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Allen Drury.

In 1965, he co-starred with Steve McQueen in Baby the Rain Must Fall, were Otto Preminger directed the movie and cast Murray opposite Henry Fonda and Charles Laughton. 

In 1972, he played the ape-hating Governor Breck in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

In 1979, Murray starred as Sid Fairgate on the long-running prime-time soap opera Knots Landing. 

In 1981, Murray decided to leave the series after two seasons to concentrate on other projects, but he left over a salary dispute.

Murray married Hope Lange in 1956. Hope Lange is whom he had co-starred in Bus Stop. They had two children named Christopher and Patricia. In 1961, they got divorced. 

In 1962, Murray married Elizabeth Johnson, and then they had three children named Coleen, Sean, and Michael.
