Early life

On January 25, 1935, Don Maynard was born in Crosbyton, Texas, in the United States. His father was a dealer of cotton. Don Maynard attended more than 13 schools, five of which were high schools, but he ultimately chose Colorado City High School. Being a Colorado City High School senior, he learned football, basketball, and track.

Started playing in college

Maynard participated in college sports for Rice University for a year before moving on to Texas Western College. Between 1955 to 1956, he only caught 28 passes in three seasons with the Miners, but he averaged 27.6 yards per catch and scored ten touchdowns. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry while rushing for 843 yards on 154 attempts. He also returned punts and kickoffs. He accumulated 2,283 all-purpose yards while playing defensive back and intercepted ten passes.

Joining other teams

He was later released by the Giants in 1959 and joined the Canadian Football league. During this time, he worked as a plumber and a teacher.

In 1960, Maynard became the first-ever player to sign with the New York Titans. He was one of only 20 players to play in the AFL for all ten seasons, and he was one of just seven players to spend their whole AFL careers with a single side. Maynard had 633 receptions for 11,834 yards and 88 touchdowns by the time his career was up. He has the greatest catch rate among players, with at least 600 catches. Maynard retired as the all-time leader in catches and receiving yards in professional football after being the first receiver to accumulate Charley Taylor passed Maynard in terms of career catches in 1975, while Charlie Joiner overtook Maynard in terms of yards in 1986.

Charity events

After his NFL career, Maynard continued to take part in several activities organized by charities. He took part in the Super Bowl XXXIII coin toss with his old colleagues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "The Greatest Game Ever Played," also known as the 1958 NFL Championship. Previously, he served as the parade's grand marshal during the El Paso Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Parade. He was a financial advisor and math and industrial arts instructor and marketed various goods.

Personal life

Maynard lived in New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, with his son, daughter, and two grandkids. In 1990, his son worked as a coach in the Canadian Football League.

After his junior season, Maynard married Marilyn (Weaver); he first met her as a student at Texas Western. She died before him. On January 10, 2022, at the age of 86, Maynard passed away at a care home in Ruidoso, among other illnesses.
