Senate of Texas

It was Huffines's intention in 2014 to seek a seat in the Texas Senate against incumbent Senator John J. Carona, who was running for Senate District 16. On March 4, 2014, Huffines defeated Carona in the Republican primary by running to his right, claiming he was a true conservative. Both candidates spent approximately $6.3 million on their campaigns during the primary.

He ran unopposed on November 4 for the state Senate, arguing for creationism in the classrooms, term limits, school choice, and opposition to new toll roads.

His tenure was marked by introducing several Republican-backed bills, including amendments to the Constitution, term limits, and anti-abortion measures.

In 2017, Huffines was ranked fourth most conservative in the Texas Senate by political scientist Mark Jones for consistently voting with his party on conservative legislation.

For a bond election to be successful in Texas, Huffines proposed a bill that would have required a 30 percent turnout, but it failed. It is estimated that if Huffines' bill is passed, a successful bond election will be virtually impossible in Texas.

Voter turnout in most such elections at the time was lower than 10 percent. With 45.9% of the vote, Nathan M. Johnson defeated Huffines for the first time in over three decades in the 26th Senate district.

Career in politics

Don never accepted government funds during his tenure as a Texas state senator. He saw the backroom deals and corruption that plagued the Austin swamp and was disgusted by them.

Thanks to Don's work, Texas' biggest corruption scandal was exposed. His legislation eliminated Dallas County Schools, a corrupt and wasteful government agency that had violated thousands of Texas laws and stolen millions of dollars from taxpayers.

Six people were incarcerated after they were exposed as part of the scheme. The Democrats won nearly all of Dallas County, including Don's Texas Senate seat, in 2018, and he was determined to keep fighting against left-wing policies and governor's offices in Texas. Don wrote legislation supporting term limits, pro-life measures, constitutional carry, and school choice during his term in office.
