Don Buchwald's father owned a small business, and his mother was an academician. He was never a good student but secured good grades because of his mother. At 16, he joined college; after a year and a half, he enrolled in the army and became a radio operator in Korea and Japan. After 18 months, he joined Brooklyn College.
