Don Buchwald's father owned a small business, and his mother was an academician. He was never a good student but secured good grades because of his mother. At 16, he joined college; after a year and a half, he enrolled in the army and became a radio operator in Korea and Japan. After 18 months, he joined Brooklyn College. He took speech training there from then; he auditioned for a play and entered the theater. There, he got this training and experience of what it is to own an academic theater. He later realized that acting was not his career, so he went into theater management.
