In 1976 he started his professional career. He competed seriously in the Open Championship twice (1989 and 1994), won five European Tour tournaments, and was a member of the 1989 Ryder Cup-winning European team. He joined the PGA Tour toward the end of his career. His greatest performance on the circuit came in 1994 when he finished second place at the New England Classic. He spent much of 1994 and 1995 playing on the PGA Tour in the United States.
