The Top 20 Funniest Movies of Hollywood

Updated on September 03, 2022 20:03 PM by Ava Sara

Comedy is the cinematic genre that ages the least. A well-executed action movie will make audiences' eyes pop for all time, while a truly horrific film will frighten audiences till the sun explodes. However, what is humorous in 1922 might hit hard in 2022. Not to mention that people have different senses of humour. I don't get it? is one person's laughter riot. That makes naming the top comedy movies of all time challenging. Regardless of your taste of humor—silly, smart, light, dark, surreal, or broad—it is reflected here. The following comedies will make you smile even if you don't typically laugh aloud at comedies. They might even cause you to guffaw in one of those loud, unplanned ways. The top 20 comedies of all time are listed here.

The Blues Brothers - 1980

This provides the best of both worlds, whether you come for the comedy and stay for the music or vice versa. The titular musical siblings (adopted) John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are on a mission from God to save an orphanage. The actors' effortless chemistry is what propels the movie; neither one of them wastes a word while still managing to make the audience laugh with a simple twitch of the eyebrow. The quest to pay a tax bill has never before (or since) in human history caused so much devastation on the roads, so much harm to the Illinois Nazi cause, and so much beautiful music.

Clueless - 1995

Clueless is frequently written off as a sugar-coated time capsule of '90s teen culture, but any serious fan knows that it is actually a classic comedy of manners and social commentary influenced by Jane Austen's Emma. Clueless elevates awkward, hormonal, status-obsessed interactions to sublime levels through heightened dialogue and a startling clarity of ideas. Let Heathers handle the psyche-damaging and intramural fighting. As Mean Girls and other comedies have shown, laugh-out-loud movies don't necessarily need to vibrate on a frequency of cartoon violence and subtle (or not) misogyny to make their marks. Many of the best comedies want to make sure you've seen their dark underbelly.

Withnail & I - 1987

Withnail & I is endlessly quotable and the subject of many drinking games. Its portrayal of the end of the 1960s and the friendship between its two leads is both silly and touching. One of those movies that is so excellent that it almost hangs its cast and crew members' necks. Richard E. Grant will always be linked with demanding beer, taking the wrong vacation, and wanting to fork things, according to writer/director Bruce Robinson, who has failed to replicate its scurrilous popularity. Still, what better way to be remembered than as a supporting character in one of the all-time smartest, most sophisticated, and most hilarious British comedies?

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - 2004

Without the ability to improvise and, later, the quick editing that gives it such a strange, gutsy feel, Anchorman's perfect casting and lead actors' chemistry would be lost. Todd Phillips' clumsy character development marries Adam McKay's post-Saturday Night Live debut as a filmmaker with the Old School actor's snappy and naive appeal. Old School, as well as the majority of other comedies overall, have an alarmingly low jokes-per-minute count when compared to Anchorman. Anchorman never skirts around a ridiculous set piece or adheres too closely to a scripted formula to appease a fictitious audience. It simply wants to be on you, like Ron Burgundy himself.

Wayne’s World - 1992

Oh, for new eyes to watch this movie. Few people who are old enough to recall the film's debut can still generate the same guffaws now, but Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey's best cinematic moment (and SNL adaption) proven to be so immediately influential and re-watchable. That shouldn't detract from how deftly filmmaker Penelope Spheeris played with viewer expectations, turning non-sequiturs into running jokes and infusing improv and sketch comedy's straight-faced madness into a narrative, character-driven movie. Only one comedy, Wayne's World (see below), has ever done hard-rock clichés better, and even that can't claim to have characters as sympathetic as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar.
