Ivy Snitzer has a huge presence on screen with her nose piercing, safety pin earrings and reddish hair. But no one ever saw her in the famous hit movie of 2001, Shallow Hal.
Now, she is 42 years old and an agency owner in Philadelphia. No one knows that until now that Snitzer was Gwyneth Paltrow’s body double in her role as Rosemary in ‘Shallow Hal.’ While Paltrow wore a bodysuit to feature her face, Snitzer’s body was used to feature the star's thighs, torso, and arms.

A Role for The Film

At that time, Snitzer was a 20-year-old acting student from Los Angele. She aspires to be a great comedian or actor. One day, she got to know about a role in Farrelly brother’s blockbuster, Shallow Hal, from her friends. As an aspirant, she agreed to meet the casting directors, accompanied by her friend.
The casting director took a bunch of pictures of Snitzer after which she was called for just talk with the film’s director. They just wanted to know that I was somebody who was cool to work with, Snitzer further explained. Within an hour, she got the job. At that time, she was really excited about the opportunity as it felt progressive to her.

She clarified, At that point, if you saw someone obese in a movie, they were a villain whereas Rosemary was cool, she was popular, she had friends.

She recalls good memories of the movie saying, It was so exciting. It was just fun to be part of a movie – there are so few people who get to do that. The crew and cast also treated her with respect and kindness. She feel really comfortable when her body was filmed. As she was funny and jolly, the film’s jokes did not offend her.
However, the horror was yet to come. Snitzer said, it didn’t occur to me that the film would be seen by millions of people. As the movie was released, it was like the worst parts about being fat were magnified. And no one was telling me I was funny.

Horror Of Post-Filming

As she was called to publicly promote the film on TV and magazines, she soon realized that it was an open invitation for strangers to criticize her. Things started accelerating the wrong way. People were unhappy that she was promoting obesity, some even sent her diet pills.

At that point, she got scared and moved back with her parents. She rejected all the calls from casting directors because the roles were mean … I didn’t want to play a woman who was so ugly and lonely that she molested young boys because that was the only way she could get affection.
Her gastric band surgery also didn’t go very well in 2003. She had to technically starve to death. She said had to have that surgery, Because I was supposed to! If you’re fat, you’re supposed to try not be.
Out of all of the fat people in the world that they could have hired for that job, they hired me, because of my personality. Before, I had to fight really hard to be seen as a personality and not just my size.
Today, Snitzer has overcome the trauma of her life post Shallow Hal. Now she is living happily with her husband and 13 years old daughter.
