What comes to your mind first when you think of Halloween? Trick-or-treat, right?! Who does not want to get all decked up with their spooky costumes and go house to house demanding treats in Halloween! Without this practise, the festival would be no fun. Initially started as a European ritual, this tradition has lived for centuries and is still practised today. Read on to know more this popular Halloween tradition!

What's "trick or treat" exactly?

Children in their favourite spooky costume visit houses with the phrase “trick or treat”. The treat is candy and sweets and sometimes money too. The trick is a prank or small mischief if no treat is given.

The lights tell it all!

It occurs on the evening of October 31st. Sometimes people even leave their porch light on to indicate that they have “treats”.

Some people put up Halloween decorations outside as a signal that they will be providing treats.

While some just leave candies or any kinds of treats on their porches for the children as many as they like.

Roots of Halloween!

The roots of this practise can be traced to the 16th century Scotland, Britain and Ireland where people disguised themselves and went house to house and put up performances to get food in Halloween.

Misfortunes if unwelcomed!

In the 19th century too, people recited verses to get food in return. However, if they felt unwelcomed, they would warn the house owners of misfortunes.

While, this ritual has been around since centuries, the phrase “Trick or treat” became popular only in the 2000s in Scotland and Ireland.
